What is the advantage of using CACTUS_CONFIGS_DIR over having a symlink? The only reason I can think of it to support systems without symlinks, such as Windows, or to allow you to have the source tree on a shared read-only filesystem. Should the feature be documented and supported?

The configs dir needs to be hidden from Eclipse--otherwise Eclipse will try and index everything on its own and the whole directory-specific include mechanism that I need will be defeated.

The Blue Gene file system does not have symlinks.

There is a certain elegance in having the Cactus source tree immutable and potentially shared between users. For example, this allows installing Cactus (or the Einstein Toolkit) on a system, and people can then add their own thorns and build.
